I think the problem comes when people overuse the default assets and gameplay mechanics. I specifically recommend 'Star Stealing Prince' and 'I Miss the Sunrise'. you might want to check out the free game bundles that Degica (the people who own RPGmaker) have on the official site Just go to additional downloads and scroll down. You have everything from straight up horror (no rpg) to tons of variations of the RPG genre. It IS a niche tool, but it's also quite versatile (specifically if you're willing to actually code) There are games out there that look and play fantastic. But even there I've found some gems among the pile. I mostly stick to freebie RPG maker titles when playing. I mean, I bought it, knowing what it was, so its not like Im complaining, and its entirely possible that I'm mistaken, as well. To that end, it occurred to me that it's called "RPG Maker," making it seems as if you could make any kind of RPG you want, but really isn't specifically for Star Ocean/early Final Fantasy-esque JRPGs? I mean, I suppose one could try to make a more Westernized RPG, but I feel like the most you could do would be to just swap out the assets for less anime-esque ones, but even then, that sounds like something of a big ask, I would imagine they would always look somewhat cartoony/anime and a CRPG like Neverwinter or a DRPG like Wizardry just seems completely out of the question, adding to the idea that RPGM is a somewhat ambiguously niche tool. Or maybe I'm just wrong, and they only appear similar in the most shallowest of senses to be fair, it's not like I've played them all, and again, I'm only curious and not trying to be disdainful or anything. Alternatively, it could just be that most RPG Maker games aren't demonstrative of what one can do with RPG Maker, maybe most are only examples of what one can do *easily* with RPGM. Like, I don't mean to sound dismissive or otherwise depreciative, but it seems to me that RPG Maker is an almost deceptively niche tool to make a very niche type of game. So, yeah! All in all, it looks great thus far! For my 2 cents, I'd hope to see more 3D implementation (for actors/enemies/etc.) in the future- that's just my opinion, while I have the developers' attention.More accurately, if one searches Steam or Itch for RPG Maker games, will what they find be indicative of what one can do with RPG Maker? Because generally they all seem. Fashionable? Popular? Whatever the right word is there, haha.ĪTB being available by default's another big plus- I assume it'll be easy to set up ATB skills right there in the editor, right? That'll be great!Īnd I'd be remiss not to compliment on the video- it was super entertaining! Can't wait to see what happens next! Very modern, very chic- if a game UI can be chic, haha. The new UI is also very impressive to me- I see others compared it to the mobile FF titles before, and that's definitely what it looks like to me as well. but this'll make it faster, right? Awesome!! That'll make my life so much easier. The particle effect animations are a big plus for me personally- in MV, I have to do my 3D stuff in another program, render it into sprites, make the spritesheet, and THEN import it. this fits in all kinds of genres! That's really, really great!! And the music itself is phenomenal as well- I actually see myself listening to this on its own sometimes, especially the Battle themes, as well as Town 5 & Dungeon 3- there's not a bad one in the bunch! To me, that was the only context they really fit in. Wow!! This is great! I'm really amazed by the music- if I'm being honest, I never really used the RTP music for previous makers since they all seemed very "medieval-" very FF, Dragon Quest, etc.
